Most of these injuries happen during recreational play, not just organized competition. Weekend basketball games, backyard baseball, and casual racquetball matches produce eye injuries at the same rate as competitive events. The risk exists whenever fast-moving objects or close physical contact are involved.

According to the AAO, basketball is the leading cause of sports-related eye injuries in the U.S., followed by baseball and softball, airsoft and pellet guns, racquetball, and hockey. Basketball injuries happen from elbows, fingers, and the ball itself during close play under the net.

Airsoft and pellet guns pose a unique risk because the small projectiles travel fast enough to penetrate the eye. Even with low-powered toy guns, a direct hit can cause permanent damage. According to the NEI, children should wear sport-appropriate eye protection for all organized sports, not just high-contact activities. Children face higher injury risk because they are still developing coordination, reaction time, and spatial awareness. Their smaller faces also mean standard adult equipment does not fit or protect them properly.

Full-face shields on hockey, football, and lacrosse helmets provide good protection if they meet ASTM standards for the sport. A shield that does not meet the standard may crack or pop out on impact. Check that your shield is rated for your sport and replace it if it shows cracks or scratches that impair your vision.
