Veins on the eyelids become visible when the thin overlying skin loses volume and elasticity with age, or when the veins themselves dilate and enlarge. The eyelid skin is among the thinnest on the body, which means even small reticular veins (the blue or purple web-like vessels just beneath the surface) can show through. Sun damage, genetics, and hormonal changes all contribute to visible eyelid veins.

Some patients develop visible veins after eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) when swelling resolves and thinner post-surgical skin reveals vessels that were previously hidden. Others notice them gradually as part of the aging process. These veins are cosmetic concerns and do not affect your vision or eye health.

Reticular veins are the blue or purple vessels visible on the lower eyelid skin. They sit in the superficial layers of the dermis and subcutaneous tissue. Telangiectasias are smaller red or purple vessels that form fine, branching patterns on the skin surface. A separate PMC case report (PMC5816316) documented successful treatment of lower eyelid reticular blue veins with long-pulse 1064 nm Nd:YAG, with complete resolution and no recurrence at eight-year follow-up. The long-pulse setting heats the vessel wall gradually, which reduces the risk of bruising and improves comfort.

According to the 2024 Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology study, typical side effects include moderate pain during treatment, mild redness resolving within 24 hours, transient eyelid swelling in 24% of patients, and a single blister in one patient that resolved within one week. These are mild and temporary for most patients.

Eye protection is critical during all periocular laser vein treatments. According to a 2025 expert consensus on ocular safety (PMC12242717), the 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser can penetrate to the retina if eye protection is inadequate. Your doctor places metal corneal shields over your eyes before starting treatment and keeps them in place throughout the session.

Treatment Experience and Results

Your doctor applies numbing cream to the eyelid skin and inserts metal corneal shields after numbing your eye surface with drops. The laser handpiece is placed against the skin over each visible vein. You feel a brief snapping or warm sensation with each pulse.
