Your retina contains rod cells that specialize in low-light vision. When you move from a bright environment into darkness, your rods gradually become more sensitive through a process called dark adaptation. This adjustment takes up to 20-30 minutes to complete, which is why a dark room slowly becomes visible after you turn off the lights.

Night blindness (nyctalopia) occurs when this adaptation process is impaired or incomplete. You may see well during the day but struggle once light levels drop below a certain threshold.

People with night blindness describe difficulty seeing road signs, lane markings, and pedestrians while driving after dark. They may notice that their eyes take much longer to adjust after oncoming headlights pass. Indoor environments like dim restaurants or movie theaters may also feel uncomfortably dark.

Night blindness does not mean you see nothing in the dark. Your eyes still function, but they adapt more slowly or less completely than healthy eyes, leaving you with reduced contrast and detail in dim conditions.

According to the AAO, night blindness is a symptom of an underlying eye or health condition, not a standalone disease. Identifying the cause is essential because some causes are treatable. Your eye doctor can determine which condition is responsible and whether treatment can improve your night vision.

Do not assume night driving difficulty is just part of aging. While some decline in night vision occurs naturally with age, a noticeable change deserves evaluation.

Common Causes of Night Vision Problems

Cataracts cause night driving difficulty by increasing light scatter and glare from oncoming headlights. According to the AAO, many patients notice halos, glare, and reduced contrast at night as their first cataract symptoms. Cataract surgery resolves this form of night vision impairment by replacing the clouded lens with a clear one.

If you find yourself avoiding night driving or using your visor more at night than during the day, cataracts may be contributing.

Even a mild uncorrected prescription worsens in low light because your pupils dilate and expose more of your lens's optical imperfections. Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) causes progressive night blindness as one of its earliest symptoms. According to the AAO, RP damages rod photoreceptors over time, followed by peripheral vision constriction. No current treatment reverses the degeneration, though gene therapy research is ongoing.

If you have had progressive night vision difficulty since childhood or adolescence, with a family history of RP, a comprehensive retinal evaluation can confirm or rule out this diagnosis.

Less Common Causes

Glaucoma damages peripheral vision, which is primarily served by rod cells. As peripheral vision narrows, your ability to see objects to the sides in dim conditions decreases. Night driving becomes dangerous because you may miss hazards approaching from the periphery.

Regular glaucoma screening through comprehensive dilated eye exams catches this condition before peripheral loss becomes severe enough to affect night driving.

According to the AAO, certain medications can cause acquired night blindness through retinal toxicity. Chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine are recognized causes requiring baseline and periodic retinal screening. Other medications that may affect night vision include thioridazine and some antihistamines.

If you notice worsening night vision after starting a new medication, report this to your prescribing doctor and your eye doctor. Do not stop the medication on your own, as the benefit may outweigh the visual side effect.

Zinc helps transport vitamin A from the liver to the retina. A zinc deficiency can impair night vision even if your vitamin A levels are adequate. People with digestive conditions, alcohol use disorders, or very restrictive diets face higher risk for this combined nutritional deficiency.

A balanced diet that includes meat, shellfish, legumes, and colorful vegetables supports both zinc and vitamin A levels. Supplements should be taken under medical guidance, as excessive zinc can interfere with copper absorption.

Night Driving Safety and When to Seek Care

Keep your windshield and headlights clean, as grime and hazing scatter light and worsen glare. Dim your dashboard lights to reduce the contrast between your instrument panel and the dark road. Look slightly to the right of oncoming headlights rather than at them to reduce dazzle and speed recovery.

Night Vision and Driving Questions

Yellow-tinted glasses reduce the amount of light reaching your eyes, which can worsen visibility in already-dark conditions. Studies have not shown them to improve night driving performance. An updated prescription with anti-reflective coating is more effective for reducing nighttime glare.

Mild starbursts around bright lights at night can be normal, with slightly dilated pupils. Prominent starbursts that interfere with driving may indicate astigmatism, early cataracts, or dry eyes. An eye exam can determine whether treatment is needed.

If your night blindness results from vitamin A deficiency, supplementation can restore your night vision. If the cause is cataracts, glaucoma, or a retinal condition, vitamins will not improve the specific problem. Your eye doctor can determine whether nutritional factors are playing a role.

If cataracts are the cause of your night vision difficulty, surgery removes the clouded lens and replaces it with a clear one. Most patients report significant improvement in night driving after surgery. Your surgeon can discuss which type of lens implant best suits your nighttime visual needs.

Young adults can develop night vision problems from uncorrected refractive errors, dry eye, early retinal conditions, or nutritional deficiencies. Do not dismiss the symptom because of your age. Schedule a comprehensive eye exam to identify the cause early, when treatment options are broadest.

LASIK corrects refractive errors, which can improve night vision if your night difficulty came from an imperfect prescription. However, some LASIK patients experience new halos or glare at night during the healing period. Discuss your night driving concerns with your surgeon during the consultation so they can set realistic expectations.
