Start here, before you download anything. Some changes in your sight need care within a day. Call your eye doctor right away if you notice any of these in either eye:

A home monitoring app gives you a short vision task on your phone and tracks whether your score drifts. It is a tripwire, not a diagnosis. The app cannot see inside your eye. It can notice a change in how your central vision handles fine detail, then prompt you to get looked at. Wet AMD is the less common form of macular degeneration, but it takes vision away faster than the dry form, and a classic symptom is straight lines starting to look wavy3. Catching that shift early is the job these tools are built for.

No, and no serious version of these tools claims otherwise. A review of 22 studies of phone and tablet visual acuity tests concluded that such apps belong in screening, not in place of a clinical measurement of your vision4. Think of a home app the way you think of a home blood pressure cuff: useful between visits, worth showing your doctor, and never the last word. Your dilated eye exams stay on the calendar; the app fills the gaps between them.

What Home Vision Monitoring Tools Are and How They Differ

Most AMD apps are built on hyperacuity, your eye's fine sense of whether things line up. A typical test asks you to slide a dot onto an imaginary line between two fixed dots. Another asks which of four shapes is slightly out of round. Both probe the small central patch of retina that AMD damages first. In one clinic study, a dot-alignment app told wet AMD eyes apart from healthy eyes of a similar age reasonably well, but told wet AMD apart from dry AMD only moderately, and the researchers said the scoring needed further work5.

The Amsler grid is the original home check. It is a square of graph paper with a dot in the middle, and many phone apps are simply that grid on glass. The American Academy of Ophthalmology advises people with AMD to use the grid once a day, one eye at a time, with reading glasses on, held about 12 to 15 inches away in good light while you stare at the center dot6. It costs nothing and takes under a minute. The Academy's instruction is to contact your ophthalmologist right away if any part of the grid looks darker, wavy, blank, or blurry6. The grid's weakness is that your brain fills in small gaps, so a real change can look normal to you.

Separate from app-store downloads are home products a doctor prescribes and a monitoring service watches for you. One is a small tabletop hyperacuity device that alerts your retina specialist when your results shift. A newer option is a home scanner that photographs your retina. In a pilot study, four people with wet AMD scanned their own eyes daily for a month, completed 211 of 240 attempted scans, and the automated fluid reading matched human graders in about 95 of every 100 comparisons7. Four people is a very small study, so treat that as an early signal.

Getting Ready to Monitor Your Vision at Home

Get four answers from your eye care team before you start. Which tool do they want you using, and does their office receive results from it? How often should you test, and in which eye? What change should make you call, rather than note and wait? And who do you call on a Friday evening? Write those answers on your appointment card. That turns a vague habit into a plan you can follow when you are worried.

Home vision tests are sensitive to conditions, so keep yours boringly identical. Use the same room, the same lamp, and the same chair. Wear the glasses you normally use at that distance, usually your reading glasses. Set screen brightness to a fixed level rather than automatic, because a screen that dims itself changes your score for reasons that have nothing to do with your retina. Then pin the test to something you already do daily, such as morning coffee.

If you are helping a parent or partner, setup is where you matter most. Install the app, sign in, set the reminders, and check that notifications are audible. Then step back for the test itself, because coaching changes the result. In a UK study, only about 32 of every 100 eligible patients approached were willing to try digital home monitoring at all, and people aged 80 and over were much less likely to agree even when the device and internet connection were supplied8. Hardware is rarely the barrier. Confidence and routine are.

What Happens During a Home Vision Check

The sequence is short and much the same across the main apps. First you confirm your testing distance, usually by holding the phone at a set arm's length. Then you cover one eye and fix your gaze on a central marker. Then you drag a dot into line, or tap the shape that looks slightly wrong, over a dozen quick rounds. The app records how far off you were and files the score against your own history.

This is the step people skip, and skipping it defeats the exercise. With both eyes open, your better eye covers for the weaker one, so an early change in one macula stays invisible to you. Covering one eye forces each macula to answer for itself. If AMD affects one eye more, that is the only way you will notice the first slide in the worse eye. Test the same eye first every time.

A paper grid check takes well under a minute per eye. App tests usually run one to three minutes per eye. How often is your doctor's call, and it depends on your risk. For the Amsler grid, the American Academy of Ophthalmology advises a check once a day, every day6. Regularity matters more than any exact schedule, because these tools compare today against your own baseline rather than against anyone else's.

Understanding What Your Home Test Results Mean

A stable score means your central vision performed the way it did last time. That is genuinely reassuring about that eye on that day. It does not mean your AMD has stopped, and it is not a reason to stretch out your next appointment. Small ups and downs between sessions are normal, and reflect lighting and tiredness as much as your retina. Your doctor watches for a trend: several sessions drifting the same way, or a sharp step down.

An alert is a prompt to be examined, not a diagnosis of wet AMD. It means the change needs a look, and plenty of alerts turn out to have another explanation. Contact your eye doctor's office, describe what changed, and let them decide how fast you need to be seen. Do not retest all evening, because a single low score can reflect your lighting and tiredness rather than your retina. A false alarm costs you a phone call; a missed change costs you weeks of untreated wet AMD, so a test that occasionally sends you in for nothing is behaving sensibly.

No home test can tell you whether there is fluid under your macula, and that is the finding that drives treatment decisions. It also cannot separate wet AMD from other causes of a blurry patch, such as a cataract. Pooling 10 studies of 1,890 eyes, the Amsler grid picked up wet AMD in about 71 of every 100 affected eyes when compared against people who had AMD without new blood vessels, and correctly cleared about 63 of every 100 eyes that were not converting9. So it misses roughly 3 in 10. That is why a normal grid is never a reason to sit on a change you can see for yourself.

How Strong the Evidence Is, and What Can Go Wrong

The strongest evidence here comes from a prescription tabletop device, not from a phone app. That is worth knowing before you judge any app by it. In a randomized trial of 1,520 people at high risk of wet AMD, those assigned to home hyperacuity monitoring had lost a median of about 4 letters of vision by the time new blood vessels were found, against about 9 letters in the standard-care group10. A later real-world analysis of nearly 9,000 users of that device found about 75 of every 100 converting eyes still seeing 20/40 or better when wet AMD was detected11.

The picture for phone and tablet tests is more sobering, and you deserve the unflattering result next to the encouraging one. In 297 UK patients checked against hospital assessment, none of three home tests reached adequate accuracy for identifying eyes with active wet AMD12. Those were a paper near-vision journal and two tablet tests. That study watched people already under treatment, which is harder than watching a stable eye. Still, it is why your clinic will not swap appointments for an app.

The risks here are not physical. The real costs are anxiety from unclear results, money spent on visits that turn out to be unnecessary, and false reassurance if a normal score talks you out of reporting a symptom you can plainly see. Coverage for prescription monitoring varies, and downloads range from free to a subscription. What monitoring buys is a better chance of being caught early, across groups of people. It is not a guarantee for any one eye, and some people convert between diligent daily checks.

When to Call, When to Be Seen, and Who to See

Some findings should get you on the phone the same day, whatever your app says. New distortion of straight lines belongs here, as does a new dark or missing patch in your central vision. So does any sudden, unexplained drop in how well you see, in either eye. When you call, say the words 'new distortion' and name which eye. That phrasing tells the scheduler this is not routine, which often decides how quickly you are offered a slot.

Other changes are worth reporting without being an emergency. A gradual slide in your app score over a couple of weeks fits here, as does mild new glare or needing more light to read than you used to. Report these at the next working opportunity rather than saving them for your annual visit. If you are unsure which group you are in, treat it as the urgent one and let the office downgrade it.

A dilated exam and retinal imaging see things no home test reaches, including fluid, bleeding, and changes in the eye that has no symptoms yet. Home monitoring sits between those exams; it does not push them further apart. If a good run of home scores has you thinking about delaying an appointment, that is the moment to keep it. The interval your specialist chose reflects your stage of AMD and your risk in each eye.

AMD care is usually led by an ophthalmologist who specializes in the retina, and prescription home monitoring is ordered through that office. Your optometrist may be the one who first spots AMD, supplies the paper grid, and can refer you onward. If you have wet AMD in one eye, the eye that has not converted is what most monitoring programs are built to watch. Make sure you know which eye you are meant to test.

Common Questions About AMD Monitoring Apps

Not usually, though a free grid app beats nothing. Paid and prescription tools add a scored result rather than a yes-or-no impression, a stored history so slow drift becomes visible, and sometimes a service that notifies your clinic. Most free app-store grids are not FDA-cleared medical devices, and you usually have no way to tell whether a given one has been tested at all. If cost decides it, use the paper grid daily and be rigorous about it rather than trusting an untested download.

It can raise the suspicion, and that is all it is meant to do. Only an eye examination with retinal imaging can confirm new blood vessels or fluid. A dot-alignment app in one study separated wet AMD from dry AMD only moderately well5. Treat any worsening score as a reason to be checked, not as an answer. The flip side matters as much: a good score does not rule out conversion, so report symptoms you notice yourself even when the app looks fine.

Follow the schedule your eye doctor sets, because it is matched to your risk. For the Amsler grid, the American Academy of Ophthalmology advises a daily check, one eye at a time6. Practical fixes come first: better lighting, the right reading glasses, a larger tablet, and higher contrast settings. If testing still is not workable, ask about a prescription tabletop device or a paper grid at a comfortable size. A simple tool you use daily beats a clever one you avoid.

App-store downloads are usually out of pocket, sometimes a subscription. The best way to find out is to ask your retina clinic's staff, who handle these authorizations routinely.

A worse score with no noticeable symptom is exactly what these tools exist to catch, because your better eye and your brain can hide an early change from you. Do not talk yourself out of the call because you feel fine. Equally, do not panic, since a single low score often reflects testing conditions. The office decides how urgently you are seen.

More Questions About Watching Your Vision at Home

Probably not, and you should not pick a tool expecting that. Home monitoring adds a layer between visits rather than replacing them. The UK study that tested three home monitoring tests against hospital assessment found none of them accurate enough on its own to identify eyes with active wet AMD12. Some clinics do use home results to help set follow-up intervals, but that is a decision your specialist makes with imaging in front of them.

Ask your specialist, because the answer differs by situation. Once an eye is being treated, your clinic tracks it with imaging at each visit, and home testing that eye can add confusing noise. The eye that has not converted is usually the one worth watching at home, since it carries a real ongoing risk. Some clinics do ask you to monitor a treated eye for a flare-up between injections, so follow the instruction you were given.

Yes. A test lasts a couple of minutes and asks nothing of your eye beyond looking at a screen, which is not a recognized cause of AMD getting worse. The genuine risks of home monitoring are about information rather than injury: needless worry from an unclear result, and false reassurance if a normal score stops you reporting a symptom.
