Bio

Douglas B Babel, MD, treats diseases of the retina as both physician and surgeon. An optometry doctorate at the Illinois College of Optometry came before medicine, followed by a medical degree and an ophthalmology residency at the University of Kansas, with the last residency year served as chief resident. Subspecialty fellowship training was completed at Tulane University.

The clinical work is retina. Diabetic eye disease and its surgical management, age related macular degeneration, and repair of retinal detachment make up most of it, alongside general ophthalmology for patients who need it.

Before Erie there were academic and hospital appointments elsewhere, a professorship and the direction of a hospital retina service, and the practice here has run since 2008. In Dr. Babel's own words, "A retinal detachment or a bleed from diabetes can take vision in days, so the first job is to see people quickly and be straight about what surgery can and cannot restore. After that it is patience, because most of what I treat is managed over years rather than visits."
