Douglas Grayson, MD

Bio

Douglas Grayson, MD, took degrees in biology and computer science at Brown University, graduating magna cum laude, and stayed there for medical school. An internal medicine internship at Mount Sinai Medical Center followed. The residency in ophthalmology and the glaucoma fellowship that followed were both served at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary. Glaucoma research from those years was recognized with an award.

The surgical practice is built on two procedures. Cataract surgery uses phacoemulsification, in which a clouded lens is broken up and removed through a small sutureless incision, and Dr. Grayson's PhacoTilt method is a refinement of how that step is carried out. Glaucoma work runs alongside it, from the management of eye pressure through to surgery when pressure will not come down any other way. Five surgical instruments of Dr. Grayson's design are now in use internationally.

Dr. Grayson is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and holds fellowship in the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American College of Surgeons. Society membership covers glaucoma at both the national and New York level, along with cataract and refractive surgery. Teaching runs through an assistant professorship at New York Medical College and through lecturing to ophthalmologists and optometrists. In Dr. Grayson's own words, "A cataract operation takes minutes, and every one of those minutes reflects a decision made long before about technique and instruments. I have spent a career trying to make those decisions safer and more repeatable, for the surgeon and for the patient."
