Bio

Mary Tam, MD, is a cataract, cornea, refractive surgeon who chose to pursue a career in eye care after completing undergraduate studies at UCLA. Dr. Tam then earned her medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine, spending years mastering the medical and surgical side of eye care. Dr. Tam then completed an internship at Newton-Wellesley Hospital, gaining hands-on experience with real patients in a clinical setting. Dr. Tam completed her residency at Stony Brook Ophthalmology, where she earned the distinction of chief resident, a role that recognizes both skill and leadership. Dr. Tam finished her formal training with a fellowship in Cornea, which allowed her to zero in on the kind of care she provides today.

Dr. Tam specializes in Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS) and Glaucoma Surgery, areas where focused expertise makes a real difference for patients. The way glaucoma works is that it gradually puts pressure on the optic nerve, and since it rarely causes pain in the early stages, Dr. Tam prioritizes thorough screenings to catch it as soon as possible. Cataracts develop when the lens of the eye becomes cloudy, and over time that cloudiness can make everyday things like reading or driving noticeably harder, which is when Dr. Tam helps patients explore their options.
