Bio

Elizabeth Maher, MD, took both an undergraduate degree and a medical degree at Harvard. An internal medicine year came first, at St Lukes-Roosevelt Hospital, and then ophthalmology residency and plastic surgical training, both at the Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital, the second under Byron Smith, Robert Della Rocca, and Richard Lisman.

The surgical practice divides into two halves that share an anatomy. On the reconstructive side it covers malposition and deformity of the eyelids, disease of the orbit, tumors that grow around the eye, thyroid eye disease, and injuries to the adnexa. On the aesthetic side it is cosmetic eyelid surgery. More than twenty years in New York have gone into both, and the reconstruction is what makes the cosmetic work conservative, since the same tissue has to close either way.

Dr. Maher is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, holds an assistant clinical professorship at Mount Sinai's Icahn School of Medicine, and teaches in an ASOPRS-credentialed fellowship. In Dr. Maher's own words, "Eyelid work is unforgiving, because the result sits in the middle of a face and a millimeter shows. What I am after is a repair that looks like nothing was ever done."
