Bio

Frances Tsai, OD, practices optometry with a focus on ocular disease and surgical co-management. Undergraduate work in biochemistry at California State University, Los Angeles began through an early entrance program and finished cum laude, and a Doctor of Optometry followed from UC Berkeley. Student externships took in a veterans hospital in San Francisco, an Air Force base medical center, a university ophthalmology department, and a community health system in the East Bay, before a residency year in medical and surgical eye care.

The clinical work covers medical eye care in a high volume referral setting, including glaucoma and corneal disease, evaluation and management before and after cataract and refractive surgery, retinal evaluations, and urgent visits. Dr. Tsai co-manages with ophthalmology specialists across retina, glaucoma, cornea, oculoplastics, strabismus, and neuro-ophthalmology, and performs light adjustable lens treatments after implantation.

Fellowship in the American Academy of Optometry came in 2025, with membership in national and state optometric associations. Teaching runs across nine optometry schools, alongside daily mentorship of students who are, like Dr. Tsai, often the first in their family to work in healthcare. Mandarin is spoken fluently and Taiwanese conversationally. Away from clinic, Dr. Tsai explores new cities, hunts for good bubble tea, and follows Korean drama and K-pop. In Dr. Tsai's own words, "I was the first in my family to work in healthcare, so I know how much it matters when someone explains what is happening with your eyes in plain language. That is what I try to give every patient, and what I try to model for the students I teach." Patients can schedule a visit with Dr. Tsai at the Omni Eye Services offices in New Jersey and New York.
