James A. Rial, MD

Bio

James A. Rial, MD, is a board certified ophthalmologist and vitreoretinal surgeon. Undergraduate study at Brown University led to a Doctor of Medicine in Syracuse, a transitional year internship in Philadelphia, and then a return to Providence for ophthalmology residency, where the last of the three years was spent as chief resident. Retina training followed in Vancouver, in a vitreoretinal surgery fellowship.

Dr. Rial treats the retina, the vitreous and the macula, and nothing else. The work runs from medical management through to surgery, and investigation into several areas of eye health has run alongside it across two decades in practice.

The American Board of Ophthalmology certifies Dr. Rial, who also holds fellowship in the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Home is the Salisbury area, shared with three children. In Dr. Rial's own words, "I tell patients that the retina usually gives some warning, and the whole job is catching it before it turns into damage nobody can undo. Twenty years in, the cases I still think about are the ones where someone came in early."
