Bio
Dr. Murphy is a board-certified, fellowship-trained glaucoma specialist. Undergraduate study produced dual degrees in biochemistry and Spanish linguistics, along with a varsity letter in men's rowing, followed by a year abroad that included volunteering at a children's hospital in Oaxaca, Mexico. Study at the Medical College of Wisconsin included work to strengthen the medical Spanish curriculum and the organization of medical missions to Central America. An ophthalmology residency at the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn preceded a fellowship in glaucoma and complex anterior segment surgery at the Edward S. Harkness Eye Institute of Columbia University-New York Presbyterian Medical Center.
Dr. Murphy's specialty areas center on glaucoma and cataract surgery. Surgical care includes interventional, laser, and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, often combined with laser-assisted and refractive cataract surgery and advanced lens implants selected for each patient. Complex cataract cases along with a wide range of glaucoma implants and laser treatments are part of routine practice, and Dr. Murphy works with companies in ophthalmic surgery and pharmacology to develop new surgical instruments, devices, implants, and treatment protocols for surgical glaucoma care.
Dr. Murphy is board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Glaucoma Society, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the New York Glaucoma Society, and the Connecticut Glaucoma Society. Dr. Murphy speaks Spanish in addition to English, and patients can request either language for visits. Away from the clinic, Dr. Murphy enjoys skiing, kayaking, camping, and golf. In Dr. Murphy's own words, "I welcome the opportunity to know my patients on both a professional and personal level, and I encourage them to bring the friends and family who support them into the office. Involving my patients’ loved ones is an important part of the compassionate, thoughtful care I strive to deliver." Patients can visit Dr. Murphy at Keyhani Eye Associates in Yorktown Heights.
