Joseph C. Schwartz, MD

Bio

Joseph C. Schwartz, MD, is a board certified ophthalmologist and vitreoretinal surgeon. Undergraduate work and a medical degree at the University of Maryland led to an internal medicine internship at Johns Hopkins University, then to an ophthalmology residency at Washington Hospital Center, closing with a year as chief resident. Retina training followed at the same institution, in a fellowship covering vitreoretinal diseases and surgery.

Dr. Schwartz sees retinal patients only. Age related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy fill much of the schedule, alongside retinal detachment repair, retinal vascular occlusion, and the vision threatening infections that need urgent treatment. Thousands of retinal laser procedures sit behind that experience, across more than two decades in retina practice.

The American Board of Ophthalmology certifies Dr. Schwartz, who also holds fellowship in the American College of Surgeons and membership in the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Home is the Salisbury area, shared with a family of four children. In Dr. Schwartz's own words, "Retinal disease rarely waits, so I would rather see someone this week than tell them it can hold. Every laser I have done comes back to the same goal, which is protecting the sight a patient still has."
