Bio

Miriam Fuhrman, MD, is an ophthalmologist who earned her undergraduate degree from Johns Hopkins University, setting the foundation for a career spent helping people see their best. Dr. Fuhrman followed up with a medical degree from SUNY Downstate Medical School, where the focus shifted to the detailed science of eye diseases and their treatment. Dr. Fuhrman then completed an internship at Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra, gaining hands-on experience with real patients in a clinical setting. Dr. Fuhrman then trained as a resident at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, where the focus was on building real-world experience with patients day after day. Most recently, Dr. Fuhrman completed fellowship training in Neuro-Ophthalmology, an experience that sharpened her skills and gave her real confidence in this area of eye care.

Dr. Fuhrman has dedicated a significant part of her career to Glaucoma Surgery and Cataract Surgery, and that shows in the quality of care patients receive. The way glaucoma works is that it gradually puts pressure on the optic nerve, and since it rarely causes pain in the early stages, Dr. Fuhrman prioritizes thorough screenings to catch it as soon as possible. As the lens of the eye gradually clouds, it can take the sharpness out of everyday vision, and Dr. Fuhrman helps patients figure out the best way to address it when the time is right. In addition to those specialties, Dr. Fuhrman works with patients who need help with General Ophthalmology, and Neuro-Ophthalmology as well.

Dr. Fuhrman is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, staying connected to the broader eye care community and continuing to grow as a professional. Speaking Spanish, Russian, Ukranian in addition to English is something that helps Dr. Fuhrman connect with a wider range of patients and make them feel welcome. When not seeing patients, Dr. Fuhrman likes to travel and experience new places whenever possible. Spending time with family is important to Dr. Fuhrman, and that sense of care extends into how she treats every patient who comes through the door. Dr. Fuhrman is available at Alden Leifer and Associates, so patients can choose the spot that is most convenient.
