Ryan Constantine, MD, PhD

Bio

Ryan Constantine, MD, PhD, came to the retina by way of the laboratory bench. A biochemistry degree at Middlebury College, taken cum laude, led to several years as a medicinal chemist in the Bay Area and four patents, and then to nine years at the University of Utah spent earning a medical degree and a doctorate together. An intern year came next, then ophthalmology residency at Duke and a two year fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery.

The clinical work is the retina, medical and surgical. Research has stayed part of it, from doctoral work on how proteins move within photoreceptors to a fellowship spent as an investigator on clinical trials.

Away from the clinic, Dr. Constantine bikes, plays hockey, and coaches a youth hockey team, and spends the rest of the time with family. In Dr. Constantine's own words, "I spent nine years learning how photoreceptors actually work before I ever operated on one, and that still shapes how I explain things.
