Dr. McBryar is referred

to by many special education professionals in the Chattanooga area to help a child’s development and strengthen their abilities.

Overview

If there's a person who is struggling with reading or keeping up with the learning demands of their age group, it could very well be caused by an issue with the child’s visual system which could successfully be corrected with vision therapy.

Dr. McBryar provides functional vision exams and treatment for various symptoms, including:

Poor eye-hand coordination
Losing one’s place when reading
Misaligned or wandering eyes
Tilted head
Poor handwriting
Difficulty focusing on reading or close up work
Reading comprehension challenges
Poor eye contact
Amplify EyeCare
Based on clinical research, it is estimated that children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have a higher prevalence of 21-50% with misalignment of the eyes (known medically as strabismus), compared to those without ASD. Dr. McBryar has extensive experience doing eye exams and providing treatment for children with autism spectrum disorder. Furthermore, Dr. McBryar’s own son is developmentally challenged which makes her more understanding from personal experience, how to properly engage with children of all developmental backgrounds. Many manifestations of ASD may at first seem unrelated to vision problems, however in truth, a lot of typical behavior patterns are actually caused by reduced visual skills. For instance, poor eye contact, head tilting, wandering eyes, and excessive blinking can all be improved with vision therapy. This form of treatment strengthens the neurological connections between the brain and the eyes which can greatly enhance the child’s performance and success.

Eye examinations include simple tests to assess general vision, as well as more comprehensive examinations for overall eye health. Depending on how extensive the testing an exam can take up to 90 minutes. Exams for the young and healthy are generally shorter in duration and should average under 30 minutes. Many experts recommend that children have a comprehensive examination before beginning grade school, followed by subsequent annual testing. Common tests include:

Why Your Practice Needs Foreign Language Content
In today’s diverse communities, language barriers can prevent patients from accessing the care they need. Many specialty doctors miss out on reaching these groups because their content isn’t available in the right language. At Specialty Vision, we believe that creating foreign language content is one of the most effective ways to expand your practice and reach more patients.

Vision And Behaviour (logo) (5)

Foreign language communities  often represent underserved pockets in local areas. Without targeted content, it’s difficult to engage these groups effectively. By producing content in languages such as Spanish, Mandarin, or Arabic, your practice can:  - Reach new patients who otherwise may not engage with your practice.  - Build trust and credibility within foreign language communities.  - Expand your digital footprint to attract a wider, more diverse audience. Many of our clients have experienced rapid growth by simply adapting their content to match the linguistic needs of their communities. If you want to grow your practice, creating foreign language content is the first step in the right direction. Interested in learning how foreign language content can grow your practice? How Traumatic Brain Injury Affects Your Vision
If you or a loved one has experienced a traumatic brain injury (TBI), you’re likely familiar with the numerous challenges that can arise during recovery. But did you know that vision problems are among the most common issues faced by TBI patients? At Neuro-Visual Performance Institute in Versailles, KY, we understand that a standard eye exam might not reveal the full extent of these issues.

Untitled Design (2)The Hidden Impact of TBI on Your Vision

Studies show that 70% to 90% of people with TBI experience problems with their ambient visual system. This is the part of your vision responsible for managing light sensitivity and helping you navigate crowded or busy environments. Imagine being unable to handle bright lights or feeling overwhelmed in a busy store—even though you can still see 20/20 on an eye chart. These are common struggles for TBI patients that standard eye exams don’t address.

Why 20/20 Vision Isn’t Enough

While traditional eye exams focus on clarity of sight, they don’t measure how well you can function in real-world settings. That’s where the ambient visual system comes in. When this system is compromised, you might find yourself struggling with everyday tasks, even if you technically have “perfect” vision. This can significantly impact your quality of life, making it difficult to return to normal activities.

How We Help TBI Patients Regain Comfort and Functionality

At Neuro-Visual Performance Institute, Dr. Rick Graebe FCOVD offers specialized neuro-optometric rehabilitation to address these specific visual challenges. Our tailored therapy programs are designed to help TBI patients manage light sensitivity, reduce the overwhelming sensations in busy environments, and restore their ability to function comfortably in daily life. Consider the case of a patient from Frankfort, KY, who came to our clinic after struggling with intense light sensitivity and difficulty navigating crowded spaces post-TBI. After a few months of targeted vision therapy, they reported significant improvements, allowing them to return to work and social activities without discomfort.

Why 20/20 Vision Isn’t Enough
When we think about reading, most of us assume that having perfect eyesight is the key. However, at Neuro-Visual Performance Institute in Versailles, KY, we know that 20/20 vision is just one piece of the puzzle. To read effectively, a child needs 17 different visual skills, many of which go beyond simply seeing clearly.

Unlock Your Child’s (1)The Role of Visual Skills in Reading

The macula, a small part of the eye responsible for 20/20 vision, is essential for seeing fine details. However, when it comes to reading, your child’s eyes must do much more. They need to work together, focus, and track words across the page. As they do this, they also need to decode the words, turn them into mental pictures, and store that information for comprehension. If any of these skills are lacking, reading can become a challenging and frustrating task.

How Vision Therapy Can Help

At Neuro-Visual Performance Institute, we specialize in vision therapy that targets these specific skills. Through a series of tests, we can evaluate how well your child’s eyes work together, how they focus, and how they track text on a page. If we find any deficiencies, we create a personalized vision therapy program to help develop these skills. Take, for instance, a young boy from Lexington who struggled with reading despite having perfect eyesight. After undergoing our vision therapy program, he not only improved his reading speed and comprehension but also began to enjoy reading for the first time. His parents were thrilled with the progress he made in such a short period.

How Targeted Sports Vision Content Can Boost Your Practice’s Impact
When running a sports vision practice, you might think creating a general video about sports vision will attract the right audience. However, focusing on specific sports, such as baseball, can make your content resonate much more with potential patients.

Hockey1Why Focus on Specific Sports?

Every sport requires different visual skills, and baseball is no exception. By narrowing down your content to discuss how sports vision training can improve baseball performance, you connect directly with what your audience cares about most. Imagine a baseball player finding your video discussing the importance of hand-eye coordination for a catcher or the visual tracking skills needed for a batter. This level of specificity makes your services more appealing and positions your practice as the go-to expert in sports vision.

The Power of Research and Specific Skills

Patients and their families are more likely to trust and engage with content that is backed by research and tailored to their needs. By highlighting studies that show how sports vision training can enhance baseball performance, you provide valuable information that can lead to increased interest in your services. This approach not only helps build trust but also differentiates your practice from others that might offer more generic services. Learn more about how we grow specialty eye care practices. How Multilingual Content Can Improve Patient Care
For many practices, language barriers can make it difficult to explain complex treatments to patients. While basic English may be enough for casual conversation, it often falls short when you need to dive into detailed medical topics like scleral lenses, vision therapy, or dry eye care. One solution is to create high-quality, multilingual content that ensures clear communication with every patient, regardless of their native language. At Specialty Vision, we specialize in helping practices create this type of content—videos and materials that can be easily shared with patients through text or QR codes. By providing clear explanations in the patient’s language, you can improve their understanding of their condition and treatment options.

Vision And Behaviour (logo) (3)Why Multilingual Content Matters:

  • Improve Patient Understanding: Medical topics are complex, and patients need to fully understand their diagnosis and treatment options. Explaining these topics in the patient’s native language builds trust and ensures they’re well-informed.
  • Enhance Patient Care: Multilingual content allows practices to deliver higher quality care. Instead of relying on basic communication skills or a translator, you can offer patients professional content that covers all the important details.
  • Streamline Communication: By using QR codes or text messaging, you can easily share videos with patients in their language, making it convenient for them to access critical information anytime.
By investing in multilingual content, you can significantly improve patient care and ensure that every patient gets the information they need in a format they can understand. What Is Vision Therapy and Who Can Benefit?
If you’ve never heard of vision therapy, you’re not alone. Many people aren’t aware of this specialized form of care, but it can make a huge difference for those who need it. At Neuro-Visual Performance Institute in Versailles and Somerset, KY, we’re here to explain what vision therapy is and who can benefit from it.

Who Can Benefit From VtWhat Is Vision Therapy?

Vision therapy is more than just a standard eye exam or a pair of glasses. It’s a personalized treatment program designed to improve visual efficiency and processing skills. But what does that mean? Visual efficiency is about gathering visual information clearly and comfortably. Some people can see clearly, but they might get headaches or experience double vision because their eyes are working too hard. Vision therapy helps to alleviate these issues by training the eyes and brain to work together more effectively.

The Two Main Categories of Vision Therapy Testing

When we evaluate a patient for vision therapy, we focus on two main categories of testing. The first is visual efficiency. This involves assessing how well you can see and how comfortable it is to do so. For example, if reading causes your eyes to strain, resulting in headaches, this is an area where vision therapy can help. The second category is visual processing skills. After gathering visual information, how well can you process and make sense of it? This is crucial for tasks like reading and comprehension. If your brain struggles to interpret what your eyes see, vision therapy can help strengthen these processing skills.

Who Can Benefit from Vision Therapy?

Vision therapy can benefit a wide range of people, from children struggling in school to adults dealing with visual discomfort at work. For instance, a patient from Nicholasville, KY, came to our clinic complaining of frequent headaches and difficulty focusing while reading. After a series of vision therapy sessions, they noticed significant improvement in both their comfort and reading speed.

Unlocking the Power of Vision in Reading and Learning

Why does my child struggle with reading?

When it comes to reading and learning, most parents and educators think about intelligence, focus, or perhaps learning disabilities. But did you know that vision plays a crucial role in your child’s ability to read and comprehend? At Neuro-Visual Performance Institute in Versailles, KY, we understand that great eyesight doesn’t always equal great vision. Reading1   The Hidden Role of Vision in Reading Reading isn’t just about seeing clearly. In fact, there are 17 different visual skills required for effective reading. From focusing and tracking to the ability to visualize words and comprehend them, these skills must work together seamlessly. When they don’t, a child may struggle to read fluently or understand what they’ve read. For example, the macula, the part of the eye responsible for 20/20 vision, is no bigger than the tip of a ballpoint pen. It’s incredible that such a small part of the eye can perform such a precise task as focusing on letters on a page. When your child’s eyes are working properly, reading can feel as effortless as watching a movie. However, if their visual skills are underdeveloped, they might struggle to move their eyes across the page, decode words, or retain information, leading to poor comprehension. How We Can Help Improve Visual Skills At Neuro-Visual Performance Institute, we offer specialized tests that go beyond the typical eye exam. We assess how your child’s eyes move, track, and focus on text. We can even demonstrate in real-time how well their eyes are working together as they read a paragraph. These tests help us pinpoint the exact areas where your child might be struggling. Once we identify the problem, we use vision therapy to train and improve these skills. The most exciting part? Once these skills are learned, they stay with your child for life. Just like learning to walk or talk, these visual pathways are permanently etched into the brain. Consider the case of a young girl from Danville, KY, who came to our clinic labeled as dyslexic. After a thorough vision assessment, we discovered that her reading issues were due to underdeveloped visual skills. Through targeted vision therapy, she was able to improve her reading ability dramatically, which led to a renewed confidence in the classroom. Schedule a Comprehensive Vision Evaluation in Versailles, KY If your child is struggling with reading, it’s worth considering whether vision issues might be the cause. At Neuro-Visual Performance Institute, Dr. Rick Graebe, FCOVD is dedicated to helping children in Versailles, Lexington, and beyond reach their full potential through improved visual skills. Don’t let an undiagnosed vision problem hold your child back. Call us today at 859-879-0089 to schedule a comprehensive vision evaluation.
